The Evolving Role of Retinoids Within Your Treatment Plan – Skinboss Bootcamp

What it is and why completing bootcamps are so important to address your skin concerns.

As we discussed in our previous weeks, bootcamps are carried out by completing acute attack phases of repair to correct specific skin concerns such as; acne, ageing, hyper pigmentation and rosacea as well as improve your skin tone and texture.

@ SKINBOSS we carry out these acute attack phases primarily using Retinoids. Retinoid bootcamps especially, can help you learn how to use this gold standard ingredient to improve your skin.

So, what are retinoids and how do we use them effectively the SKINBOSS way?

WHAT ARE RETINOIDS?

To bring it back to the basics, retinol—alongside other retinoids, such as Tretinoin/retinoic acid and retinyl palmitate—is essentially a derivative of vitamin A, which is one of the body’s key nutrients for boosting cellular function and cell turnover. So, when we say retinoids, we mean different forms of vitamin A which can vary in strength and are used for different levels of stimulation and repair.

Tretinoin (or retinoic acid), is the most common prescription retinoid on the market that can target both acne and signs of anti-aging more aggressively. Tretinoin/ retinol acid cannot be tolerated long term, if used incorrectly and for too long the skin will become resistant and cause chronic inflammation. With retinol, it is an over-the-counter retinoid product that is generally not as irritating as the prescribed options and used to help improve all skin conditions as well as uneven skin tone and texture. Retinol can be tolerated long term, and the skin will not build resistance making it a better option for long term control and maintenance.

There is an exception to these clear-cut differences between Tretinoins and retinols in the market. There are some medical grade skincare brands such as ZO by Dr ZeinObagi. His high potency retinol complex’s, unique delivery systems and skin conditioning agents make his Retinols stand out from the crowd and considerably more effective. This means where as some retinol reactions are minimal, with ZO retinols more aggressive reactions are expected. However, there are programs ranging from mild too aggressive to suit all individual needs.

Retinol is a powerhouse of an ingredient for a reason: it targets most of our top skin concerns. It’s added to topical skincare products to promote: skin renewal, improve texture, brighten skin tone, reduce acne, manage rosacea, and boost the collagen production. Retinoids also function like an antioxidant to help address free radical damage, which leads to visible signs of aging and skin deterioration.

Retinoids are the ingredient that does it all in dermatology, both cosmetically and medically. I consider it a gold standard in skincare and often explain it to my patients as something that elevates your results to a transformative level.
