When present on the face it is typically located on the lip, cheeks and forehead forming the commonly known pregnancy mask. When the condition occurs due to hormonal changes during pregnancy it is known as melasma or when taking birth control pills; chloasma which also can make us photo sensitive and more prone to UV damage.

UV & IRA rays can then darken and worsen the appearance of hyper pigmentation.

Melasma can be one of the most stubborn and difficult forms of pigmentation to treat, but merely requires consistency and time to allow the active ingredients to suppress the pigment formation.

The most important and main part of the treatment as well as maintenance is your medical home care. This is because hyper pigmentation, especially melasma is a lifelong skin condition and once treated must be maintained to prevent pigment returning.

First, I will place you on a pigment suppressing and resurfacing protocol and then to target the skin I will choose the right procedure for you to gain the maximum effect.

Each procedure is designed to your specific needs so this will be carefully discussed at your consultation. Melasma if it does not subside once hormones return to normal is a lifelong skin condition and can not be cured. Once corrected it needs to be maintained to prevent the disease from reoccurring.

SKINBOSS top tip: If you are pregnant, on birth control or already have melasma, apply a medical grade sunscreen and reapply every 1-2 hours. This information is not readily given to women but incredibly important.
